Kristen Johnston made her professional stage debut in New York with the Atlantic Theater Company, where she appeared in productions such as Stage Door and As You Like It. Following her performance in The Lights, a Carsey-Werner casting agent saw her and recommended her for the role of Sally Solomon in the television series 3rd Rock from the Sun, for which she received two Emmy Awards. Her six-foot-tall stature drew a lot of attention.

In 1993, she made her feature film debut in The Debt, which won the Best Short Film award at the Cannes Film Festival. Years later, Johnston portrayed Kate in the film Backfire! She later appeared in the sixth and final season of Sex and the City, a comedy-drama. She also appeared in six episodes of NBC’s ER. Johnston had a recurring role on the CBS sitcom Mom in 2018, which was upgraded to series regular for season 7, which aired from 2019 to 2020.
